Navigating the Next Steps: When IVF Leads to Pregnancy

The moment you've been hoping for has arrived — the pregnancy test is positive after undergoing IVF. A flood of emotions, from elation to anxiety, might wash over you. While the path to this moment may have been lined with challenges, the journey continues as you transition from IVF procedures to prenatal care. Here's what to anticipate in the coming weeks and months.

Greetings from Amma Bear,

The moment you've been hoping for has arrived — the pregnancy test is positive after undergoing IVF. A flood of emotions, from elation to anxiety, might wash over you. While the path to this moment may have been lined with challenges, the journey continues as you transition from IVF procedures to prenatal care. Here's what to anticipate in the coming weeks and months.

1. Confirming the Pregnancy:

Blood Tests: Shortly after a positive home pregnancy test, your fertility clinic will likely schedule blood tests to measure the level of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone produced during pregnancy. These levels typically double every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy and help confirm a viable pregnancy.

Ultrasounds: Around the 6th to 8th week, you'll have your first ultrasound. This is a joyous moment for many, as it allows you to see the embryo(s), verify their placement, and often, hear the heartbeat(s).

2. Transitioning to an OB/GYN:

After the initial confirmations and early monitoring by your fertility clinic, you'll transition to an obstetrician or midwife for the remainder of your pregnancy. This handover usually happens around the end of the first trimester.

3. Monitoring and Regular Check-ups:

Because IVF pregnancies are often classified as high-risk (particularly if you're carrying multiples), you might have more frequent prenatal visits. These appointments will monitor your baby's development, your health, and address any concerns.

4. Embracing the Emotional Transition:

Moving from fertility treatments to pregnancy can be an emotional roller coaster. It's natural to feel a mixture of joy, relief, anxiety, and even survivor's guilt if you've been part of support groups or communities where others are still trying to conceive. Seeking emotional support, be it from therapy, loved ones, or support groups, can be invaluable during this period.

5. Staying Informed and Advocating for Yourself:

Every pregnancy is unique, and while your history with IVF can influence certain aspects of care, it's crucial to stay informed. Research, ask questions during appointments, and don't hesitate to advocate for your needs or concerns.

6. Celebrating Each Milestone:

From the first flutter of movement you feel to the growth of your baby bump, embrace and celebrate each moment. These milestones, big and small, are testaments to your resilience, strength, and the beautiful journey you're on.

While the process of IVF can be intricate and emotional, so too can the transition into pregnancy. Always remember that you're not alone on this journey. Lean on your support networks, medical team, and the wealth of knowledge available to navigate each step with grace and understanding.

With admiration for the steps you’re making,

Amma Bear
